Actors biography:

Finlay is a Scottish actor from the wee town of Brechin, Angus, and a graduate of Edinburgh Napier University’s Stage and Screen Acting course.

Since graduating, Finlay has begun building his career across television and film, making his first on-screen role in Department Q Season 2, where he plays a local police officer. He is particularly drawn to character-driven work and the opportunity to bring grounded, authentic performances to the screen.

Finlay’s love of acting began at 18, when he played the Woodcutter in Brechin High School’s production of Hansel and Gretel. Having grown up without a huge theatre scene on his doorstep, he sought it out for himself, travelling to Dundee and Aberdeen to watch as much theatre as he could. This early curiosity developed into a passion for storytelling that led him to train at Edinburgh Napier.

During his training, Finlay developed a particular love for classical theatre and heightened text, with his performance as Serbryakov in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya winning Best Performance at the university’s End of Year Awards. His other stage credits include Love and Information and The Beaux’ Stratagem.

With a strong interest in both television and film, Finlay is excited by work that is character-led, naturalistic and rooted in a strong sense of story. He is particularly passionate about Scottish screen and theatre, and the opportunity to contribute to stories that reflect the people and communities they come from.

Away from acting, Finlay can usually be found supporting Brechin City — the best football team in Angus, obviously — or watching a film. He has seen over 1,800 of them, although he insists there are still a few left to discover.
